Final Blog

Where have you come in regards to this unit?

In regards to this unit, I have come to understand that you do not have to be good at grammar and spelling to be a good writer. I found out that a lot of teachers in high school and some in college believe that a good write is someone that is good a spelling and grammar, but wouldn’t that make them just good at English. I never realized that most of my high school teachers taught five paragraph essay format because that its what I know how to do and I have always done papers that way. In regards to the semester, I have come from finding knew things out in English like how everything is pretty much its own genre, how good writers are not always good at grammar or spelling, how to use a blog, and genres can be broken.

What have you learned, nothing specific?

I have learned many things about English. I have learned that genres are pretty much everything and anything. Who knew that our world had a certain way of doing things. Think about an essay, you wouldn’t write and essay on a shirt would you? Our world sees that you should write an essay on a nice, white piece of paper. I have learned through this semester that good writes are not always good at grammar or spelling because that would make them good at writing and English. I have learned about blogging and how you can break a genre. I have learned that I am not very good at explaining myself and giving examples, but I am working on that to become better because communication is very thing.

What do you think is the “big takeaways” for you, that thing that will really stick with you?

The “big takeaway” from this unit would be that you don’t have to be good at the “English” part to be a good writer. This takeaway is also one of my big takeaways for the semester. I will takeaway from this class how to use a blog, that I can be a good write even if I am not good at spelling and grammar, and that everything can be classified as its own genre. I have learned a few things that I will takeaway from this class and that I will never for get. I will take these big takeaways with my though my years of college and maybe even to my career.

What questions still linger even though the unit is “finished”?

I really don’t have any lingering questions for this unit. I don’t have any lingering in this world like just a simple text to a simple writing on the wall or board. I think I am doing well at try to do better at explaining myself in my blogs because in the begin and even in the middle it was a work in progress. I have never really been good at explaining myself in words, but I am do well at trying to learn. You have explained enough that I really don’t have any questions.

Is there anything else you really want to talk about? Say it.

I don’t have anything to say or need to talk about with it because like the question before I should have asked it or said it all ready. I should have spoken up if I had something to say.

Use specific examples to successfully back up all claims, specific quotations, page numbers, ect. so I know exactly what you’re talking about.

All my claims have been back up by examples. I have been trying really hard on try to give examples to everything or trying to explain what I am trying to say. I have learned some things that I will take with me. I have learned in this class many things about English and writing. I have learned that we have been taught things certain ways that I never knew before or realized before. I never realized that our world had a certain was to do things like cover letters are done a certain way or papers are written on paper. I just thought that was the way and real never realized I was doing that. I have successful backed up all claims with my learning experiences and how I have learned it.

Final Blog Unit #2

Where have you come in regards to this unit?

I have learned about the many genres because I had no idea that almost everything we write is a different genre like writing a paper, newspaper articles, facebook statues, and even text messages. I have come in regards to this unit is getting to understand how people respond do the breaking  of a genre.

What have you learned, nothing specifics?

I have learned about how when breaking a genre people respond very differently. They can respond by yelling, being confused, and just did not care. I have learned about how everything can be a genre. In genres, you can break them and I had know idea if you break a genre people will look at it differently. I never realized people looked at them differently.

What do you think is the “big takeaway” for you, that thing that will really stick with you?

I think the big takeaway for me is I learned about the different genres in writing. I think another big takeaway is I never realized that people looked at genres a certain. When people look at genres like an essays, you think it should be typed on white paper, texting language would not be in a paper you would turn into a teacher, or changing the contents of a ticket. I never knew that genres had like “rules” to doing them.

What questions still linger even though the unit is “finished”?

I do not think I have any questions lingering in my head about this unit now because it is almost over. If I had a question still lingering in my head now I should have asked it way before now because it is the end of the unit and everything is due tomorrow. I do not have any questions that are lingering in head. Think you explained things very well and that is why I have no questions to ask.

What did you do really well?

I think I did really well at understanding the different genres and how they work. I think I did well understand the breaking of a genre because I was not in class that day you explained it. I picked up the concept really well and totally understood it. I did well with how there are a lot of different genres and I understood how they worked.

Is there anything else you really want to talk about? Say it.

I do not really have anything to say because I do not have questions to ask or anything to talk about. As I said in the question about it there is any questions to ask I should have already come and talk to you about it. It is the end of the unit and I should have came to you before it was over, but I do not have anything to talk about or ask. I think you explain over thing very well that I did not have anything to say or ask about.

Use specific examples to successfully back up all claims, specific quotations, page numbers, etc. so I know exactly what you’re talking about.

We did a Illinois State policy ticket and changed the contents of the ticket. We put on the ticket if someone had a window open over break or if they did not follow the rules for when you leave for break. I found out that not many people freaked out as much because they were just confused about the ticket and why they got it. I thought that more people would have freaked out about having a ticket under their dorm room door. If I had a ticket under my door I probably would not have read it, but just freaked out because there is a ticket under my door. I would have been really confused and tried to think what did I do wrong. I thought in my research there would have been more people that freaked out and did not read the contents of the ticket.

Learning
  • I am learning about the different types of genres
  • that you dont have to be great at spelling to be a good writer
  • I have learned about myself that I am terrible at writing how I feel and learn
  • That you can break a genre and must people will be confused because we think things need to be a same way everytime
  • I have learned that I need to be more specific with what I am saying in my papers and blogs.

Half-way Blog

Where have you come so far in regards to the unit?

I have found out that pretty much anything can be a genre like as simple as a text, a whiteboard, and to even a billboard. I had no idea that we have structure to everything that we write. When we write things in a text it is totally different then writing a paper I knew this, but I never really thought about how different they really are. I knew all of it was writing and I just thought they were all the same writing. In reality they are all different genres and completely different contents. I never thought of all the different genres there actually are in this world.

What have you learned, give specifics?

I have learned about the different types of writing and how there are different types of genres. When you write a paper it is a different genre from writing an article because there is different content to both. I have found out that in different genres there is different content. The different content would be like location, how you write it, and what you use to write on/ in. Location is where you write like if it is a dairy you normally write it in a private place like a bedroom. How you write it is the structure of it like in an article you need a title and by whom it was written by. What you use to  write on/ in like texting you would type it on your phone or when you write an article you would most likely type it on a computer, but with a message in a dairy it would be on a dairy page in the dairy.

What questions do you still have for me?

I do not have any questions for you because I completely understand what I am do for this project and I understand what is going on in the classroom.

Is there something that you really don’t understand?

I understand everything that we are doing right now. I understand that pretty much anything is a different genre. When you break something in a genre it is weird to because we are use to structure and we as human do not do well with change if we think it has a structure of doing it.

What do you think you are doing really well?

I think I have done well at understand the different genres in the world. Being in this English 101 class I have learned about the different genres in the world and how pretty much anything is a different genre. I have done well at try to write these blogs because I have a hard to at writing how I feel or what I have done well at or just writing in general. I know I am still learning, but I have tried very well at it.

Is there anything else that you really want to talk to about?

I do not have anything that I really want to talk about because I have no questions and I understand things for this unit. I do not have anything to say about this project because I understand what I have to do.

Use specifics examples from both your work as well as the other work read/examined in class in order to more successfully back up your claims.

I think being more successfully in this unit you need to understand the different genres and how they can be broken. In unit two project I think to be successful is to do more experiences with breaking the genre and having more information from the experiences you do. With having more information you can explain more on the project and have a better project. People will get more out of the project if you get more information and that means more experiences on breaking the genre.

Evaluating the Standard

When a person speaks or  writes in Standard  English, what exactly does that mean?

I think if someone speaks or writes in Standard English is when they do not use slang or contractions in their writing or when they speak. Standard English is structured to me. I think is when you write a lot of papers and you have to have no errors in your papers. Its formal because it is well organized and with no error. Formal is following the requirements and customs and I believe that is Standard English.
How do you think this particular variety of English became the standard ?

I believe it became that standard because everyone thought of English as writing a lot of papers. They thought that that papers had to be perfect with no errors on grammar or spelling. It is because everyone believed this that it became the standard.
What makes someone a good writer? What kinds of things do they do when they write?

  • Good Ideas for different kinds of genres
  • Makes clear thoughts
  • Gets facts straight
  • Understands what they are talking about
  • Good with words

What are some things that this person does that makes them a “bad” writer in your eyes?

  • Not making sense in a paper/ not clear
  • Does not make their paper or genre interesting
  • Does not explain ideas or information

Are there times when a person you meet that doesn’t speak “correct” English? What does that person do that it is “incorrect”?

  • When they use slang and they do not say the real word they mean
  • If they say me and Kelsy and not Kelsey and I

What particular types(or genres) of writing should students be doing in elementary and secondary school to prepare them for college and the work force?

In the younger years of school they should still teach the kids how to spell and correct grammar. In the secondary, they should teach the kids about great ideas and ways to write different genres. They should not be as structured because when you get to college or the real world they are not going to have a set structure because college and the real world is all on you.
Does Standard English= correct English

I think Standard English is correct English because even on standard test they believe you need to be correct at grammar and that equals English. They believe if you are not good at grammar than you are not good at English.

Final Blog

Where have you come in regards to this unit?

  • In this unit have come to realize that it does not matter if your not good at grammar or spell in writing because that does not mean you are not a good writer. I have always been told and taught that if I can not spell or I am not good at grammar that I will never be a good writer. I have also learned about the many genres because I had no idea that almost everything we write is a different genre like writing a paper, newspaper articles, facebook statues, and even text messages.

What have you learned, nothing specifics?

  • I have learned about my method of doing homework and how I like structure when it comes to my homework. I have learned many things about drunk driving and how it affects many people in this world. I have learned tips on how to prevent drunk driving and saving lives on the roads. I have learned many things about this unit in terms of what is a genre or what are genres. I found out that there is a difference between being a good writer and being good a spelling and grammar.

What do you think is the “big takeaway” for you, that thing that will really stick with you?

  • I think the big takeaway for me is I learned about the different genres in writing. I found out that you don’t have to be good at grammar to be a good writer. If you said I am good at English then maybe you should be good at spelling and grammar, but writing is just thoughts and ideas not spelling and grammar. I will take that with me because I know I am not great at English, but that does not mean I am not a okay writer.

What questions still linger even though the unit is “finished”?

  • I do not think I have any questions lingering in my head about this unit now because it is almost over. If I had a question still lingering in my head now I should have asked it way before now because it is the end of the unit and everything is due tomorrow.

What did you do really well?

  • I think I did really well at researching information on drunk driving because I search and search for a topic. I found two I liked a lot, but then I thought about it and did more research on both of them again. I realized that drunk driving is more relevant to Illinois State student and to our age group. I think people should be better informed on drunk driving and how bad it is.

Is there anything else you really want to talk about? Say it.

  • I do not really have anything to say because I do not have questions to ask or anything to talk about. As I said in the question about it there is any questions to ask I should have already come and talk to you about it. It is the end of the unit and I should have came to you before it was over, but I do not have anything to talk about or ask.

Use specific examples to successfully back up all claims, specific quotations, page numbers, etc. so I know exactly what you’re talking about.

  • I pretty much got all my information for articles on the internet and form my interview with Mrs. Rabe-Hemp. All my claims are from my sources on the source page. I have one source that I can not find on the internet because I got it from the person I interview and talk to about drunk driving. She gave it to me in the interview and told me it was from Illinois DUI workshop on the internet, but I could not find it online. I have the sheets and I use some information form this source. I have all my sources printed out and my information I wanted to use is highlighted. I tired to have a lot of facts and statistics from the internet to make my paper successful. I think to make a paper successful you need sources to back up your information.

Notes

  • The text started by the teacher assigning the homework to the class. The text moved out into the world by having a blog and having other people read your work.
  • The genres I use were newspaper articles and other articles as well. The other articles were facts and statistics on drunk driving and how many people are affected.
  • My classmates and teacher will be reading this and maybe someother people also.
  • I really don't think anyone will read it in the future because we are not putting this on the blog and I probably will not be showing this to anyone.
  • If I did post my work on the blog i am sure they would use some of my work i have used and try and realize how many people are really affected by drunk driving.

half-way blog #2

Where have you come as far in regards to the unit?

  • Well at first, I really did not know what to do for my topic or what to write about or what I thought was interesting. I have my topic now and I think it is interesting about learning about how making one stupid choice on one day can change your whole life. So far, my topic is pretty good, but that is all I have so far.
What have you learned, give specifics?

  • I have learned that it is hard to pick topics if you do not know what to do. One big thing I have learned is that I am a very detailed person. I guess I am detailed person and guess that means I need structure with my assignments. I have learned this because in this class it is not as structure as must of my English classes have been in the past. This also could be from teacher in high school and grade school not letting me pick whatever I want for my topic and decide how I want to do thinks. I have always been told by my teachers that I was not good at writing because I was not good at spelling and grammar, but that does not mean I am a good writing.
What questions do you still have?

  •  How are you grading this project in the end?
  •  What all are we do for this project?
Is there something that you just really don’t understand?

  • Well I still really don’t know if I did my rubric/criteria right. I really don’t understand what you want from this project in terms of the information or assignments.
What do you think you are doing really well?

  •  I just started figuring out what I really want to do for my topic or what I find interesting that will be relevant to Illinois State. I think I have done some good research for just figuring out my topic. I have done good research because I have been searching for the right topic and I did not give up until I found the right one I wanted to do. In all and all I search through a lot of articles on drunk driving to find out if this would be the right topic for me. Also, I have been doing good on figuring out what I want to do with my topic.
Is there anything else that you really want to talk about?

  • I was just wondering about my topic, should I try and find facts on DUIs on Illinois State students?
Use specific examples from both your work as well as the other work read/examined in class in order to more successfully back up your claims.

  • I think to be successfully with backing up my claims would be based on the facts and statistics on drunk driving. The facts could be what is drunk driving? What is the legal limit on drunk driving? I think I could show different statistics on drunk driving with the super bowl and drunk driving in general. What are some of the statistic on fatality of drunk driving. How many people actually go to the super bowl and of how many of them drink. I can ask really good questions to the person I am interviewing to get really good information on the topic I am doing.

Topic: Super bowl

1. My topic is how the super bowl is like one big party. When you go to super bowl parties they usually have alcohol and this relates to parties at college every weekend.

2. http://www.indystar.com/article/20120129/NEWS07/201290393/Super-Bowl-2012-Soon-ex-Hampton-leave-Bud-Light-you

3. My genre I am writing in is a newspaper article.
